So what is at the base of eliminating your personal debt? Simply earning more than you are spending and taking the extra you have left over and paying down your debts.
It is sad fact but I read the other day that 71% of people said that their personal debt is making their home life unhappy. That is completely unnecessary and I am going to reveal some leading indicators that will identify if you are on that same path.
1. Your Debt to Income Ratio: Add up your total non-mortgage debt payments you make each month. Then take that number and divide it by the amount of income you have going in the bank. That number should not be higher than 20%. If it is then you are headed towards that unhappy household.
2. Minimum Payments: If you are only able to make the minimum payments then you know that trouble is lurking. In order to eliminate that debt you have to be able to make a payment that is larger than the minimum.
3. Maxing Out Credit Cards: If you are maxing out your credit cards then again you are in trouble. This is just a flat out sign that you are spending way more than you make. Stop now!
4. Credit Cards for Everyday Purchases: If you are using your credit cards for buying gas or food then again you know that cash is being spent on something that it shouldn't be. You need to get your priorities right and spend the money on essential expenses.
5. Worrying about you Rep: This is a hard one to swallow but if you are worried about people learning you are struggling with debt then something is wrong. This is great motivating factor though and should be used as such to get out of debt.
6. Creditors: If you have creditors or debt collectors calling you repeatedly then again you know that you need to get a plan together. This is frustrating and a scary situation to be in, but knowing your rights and finally stepping up to the plate with a plan can end it fast!
These are just a few leading indicators of major trouble. This is a very difficult place to be in. Now is the time though to act and put a plane together so you can destroy you debt and experience what it is like to be free of financial obligations.
